Antique Veuve Clicquot Champagne Riddling Rack
This original late-19th-century French riddling rack (pupitre) is crafted from solid oak and features a classic double-sided, folding A-frame design built to hold 120 bottles. Invented by the legendary Madame Clicquot in 1816, this essential cellar tool allowed bottles to be angled downward, enabling sediment to settle in the neck for easy removal. Over a century of use in the historic chalk cellars of Reims has given the timber a rich, deeply weathered patina with authentic wine stains and natural distressing.
The Anchor Logo Explained
The top center of the rack features an authentic hot-iron stamp of an anchor flanked by the initials V.C.P. (Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin). First chosen in 1798 by the house's founder, Philippe Clicquot, the anchor was selected as a Christian symbol of hope and steadfastness. In 1814, amid the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, Madame Clicquot successfully broke a naval blockade to deliver her vintage champagne to Russia, where it became a massive success. Following this triumph, the anchor became a prominent, permanent symbol of the brand's resilience, rigor, and global seafaring legacy, burned into all authentic cellar equipment, crates, and corks.
