An early C20th French enamel sign for ANTAR, L'Huile de France, 45cm x 55cm.

This is an authentic slice of mid-century French garage culture. Featuring bold, embossed typography against a vibrant cherry-red backdrop, this heavy-duty enamel sign proudly markets "ANTAR: L'Huile de France" (The Oil of France). The crest at the top represents Pechelbronn, the historic Alsace region where the oil was sourced. Built to withstand decades of outdoor weather at roadside service stations, these signs have become highly prized collector's items for anyone who loves vintage automotive history or industrial decor.

Antar was a prominent French petroleum company and motor oil brand founded in 1927 in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn, Alsace. Rooted in the historic Pechelbronn oil wells—some of the oldest in the world—the company grew rapidly to become a major player in France's post-war automotive boom. Widely recognized by its iconic slogan, "Antar, l'huile de France" ("Antar, the oil of France"), the brand became a household name through its distinctive vintage advertising and gas stations. In 1976, Antar merged into Elf Aquitaine, which was eventually absorbed by TotalEnergies, officially ending the Antar brand name by 2005.
