This mid-18th-century French Provincial vaisselier (open plate-rack dresser) from Normandy is an exceptional example of rustic regional craftsmanship, constructed entirely from solid, old-growth Norman oak.
The piece features a traditional two-part construction, marrying a shallow, open upper display gallery with a deep, substantial storage base. The upper rack is designed with narrow shelves and protective retaining bars meant to securely showcase fine pewter or regional faience dinnerware.
It is accented with pierced heart motifs carved into the central splats—a classic symbol of French folk art often associated with marriage or family commissions. Reflecting the popular Louis XV or Rococo styling of the mid-1700s, the lower buffet houses two wide drawers sitting above a pair of cupboard doors decorated with bold, sinuous, asymmetrical panels and molded borders.
Decades of care have given the dense oak a rich, deeply burnished patina that highlights its tight grain and historic character, making it both a beautiful decorative statement and a functional piece of country furniture.
