Vintage wooden butter mold. Butter molds were historically used to shape freshly churned butter into decorative formsThis particular mold consists of two parts: a base with a cavity and a stamp with a carved design, likely depicting a bird or other motif. The mold appears to be made of wood, possibly sycamore, holly, or lime, which were commonly used materials for butter molds.
Butter molds like this were used as early as the Tudor period, but became more common in the 19th century. They served both a decorative and practical purpose, allowing farmers to add visual appeal to their butter and provide a way for customers to identify their product. To use the mold, softened butter would be pressed into the cavity, and the stamp would be used to create the design on the surface. The molded butter would then be chilled until firm.
